Rooted in Creativity: ART’kademie Inspiring Start

Two Saturdays ago, May 31st, a vibrant community of creatives, nature lovers, and curious minds came together for the kick-off of ART’kademie –a participatory arts initiative within the framework of the New Inherit project, coordinated by Culture Goes Europe (CGE) and our cultural ambassadors, and hosted at the Other Music Academy (OMA) in Weimar. This launch marked the beginning of a series of interdisciplinary residencies and workshops that will unfold throughout the summer, culminating in a final exhibition in September.

  • The first encounter invited participants to reconnect with their surroundings and engage their senses through a Vegetation Tour led by a local expert in wild plants and edible roots. As the group strolled through the Weimar landscape, they discovered a fascinating world hidden in plain sight. Many of the plants introduced on the tour are not only edible but also highly nutritious –offering a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to store-bought vegetables–. Participants learned how wild herbs and roots can enrich their daily meals, and how reconnecting with local vegetation can become a form of ecological empowerment.
  • But the experience also came with a note of caution. The guide carefully explained the risks associated with certain toxic plants, which can be extremely harmful. This awareness-building component made the tour not only enlightening but vital, grounding the project in both creativity and responsibility.

Following the tour, the group made their way to the cozy premises of OMA, where the rest of the ART’kademie activities will take place. Awaiting them was a spectacular vegan and root-based brunch, lovingly prepared by the OMA team. The manu was a true homage to the day’s discoveries: roasted potatoes, earthy bognatos, seasonal asparagus, vibrant soups, homemade bread, and more. Each dish celebrated the power and beauty of local, plant-based cuisine.

With full bellies and nourished spirits, participants then had the chance to hear from the cultural ambassadors. They shared their visions for creative co-creation, explained the themes of their artistic residencies, and invited everyone to participate in a summer of exploration through various mediums including collage, mural art, installation, and community-rooted storytelling.

The atmosphere throughout the day was one of joyful curiosity, collaboration, and anticipation. It was clear from the very first gathering that ART’kademie is not just a workshop series, it is a growing collective experience rooted in connection, expression, and shared learning.

As we look ahead to the next workshops between June and August, all roads lead to the final exhibition on September 13th –a moment to celebrate everything that will emerge from this process of artistic germination.

Participation is free, and all materials are provided. Whether you’re an experienced artist or just someone curious to explore your creative side, ART’kademie offers a space for everyone.
