Initiative FröHlich Platz

Wiemarer Bürgerinitiative für einen menschenfreundlichen August-Frölich-Platz

The  FröHlich Platz initiative is a great example of how placemaking initiatives can facilitate community building in our city of Weimar. Starting from the collective effort to envision a transformation in the neighborhood, the opportunity to have a vibrant public square instead of a traffic intersection, we hope, one day the residents will experience their  vision coming true and be able to gather in a shared public space that they, themselves, were the catalyst to its realisation.

About the project

The Initiative Frö(h)lich Platz highlights CGE’s role as a facilitator of placemaking processes that strengthen democratic participation and activate public spaces as sites of shared responsibility and belonging, which is key competences that CGE brings to local, national, and European placemaking movement.

The initiative proposes inclusive, creative placemaking strategies developed in collaboration with residents, students from the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, and local partners. On their website, they present four visionary scenarios for the square’s future, from a festive cultural hub and a dynamic weekend meeting place to a shared street “Woonerf” spaceand an interactive, pedestrian-centered experience with green areas, play zones, and community activities. These concepts aim to boost social interaction, strengthen local identity, and enhance quality of life without losing the everyday functionality of the space.

Central to the project is active neighbourhood participation: people living in and around Weimar are invited to share ideas, contribute to surveys, and join discussions with city administrators and fellow citizens to shape a more inclusive, lively urban environment.
