SoftSkills4Democracy

Developing Key Competencies for Active Civic Participation

Taking part in the project inspired me to see how soft skills truly support democratic values in action. Collaborating with people from diverse backgrounds showed me the power of empathy, inclusion and shared responsibility. Through the activities, I strengthened my communication and problem-solving abilities and gained a deeper appreciation for how participation sustain a democratic community.

About the project

SoftSkills4Democracy (SoftSkills4D) is a youth participation project that supports young people in Germany and Poland to become more confident, skilled, and active members of democratic society. The project focuses on developing key soft skills such as critical thinking, communication, teamwork, creativity, media literacy, and understanding digital tools like artificial intelligence. Through a long-term mentorship program, interactive workshops, and hands-on learning experiences, participants learn how these skills are useful for their personal and professional lives, and for active civic engagement.

Over 16 months, young people aged 18–30 take part in local workshops, community events, and job shadowing experiences with NGOs and civil society organisations in both countries. The project especially aims to include young people with fewer opportunities and international backgrounds. By connecting participants with mentors, decision-makers, and local initiatives, SoftSkills4D encourages them to take responsibility, participate in democratic processes, and create positive change in their communities. The project ultimately aims to strengthen youth participation, social inclusion, and democratic values across Europe.
