Official Launch: European Survey on the Economic Situation of Civil Society Workers

We live in interesting, ever-changing times. The year 2020 and its unexpected events has seen humanity at its finest but has also highlighted fundamental, systemic problems in many aspects of society.

One such problem is the economic weakness and labor insecurity in the field of civil society, of employees, employers, free lancers and volunteers in civic education, human rights education / education for democratic citizenship, and the many people actively in working towards the sustainability of the democratic societies we live in. Many of those people and organisations have over-extended their financial and human resources in ways that would be unthinkable in other parts of the economy – and have, thus, been hit even harder by the recent lockdowns and the cessation of the social activities/events/trainings that are at the core of their work.

As a reaction to this structural financial weakness of civil society in general and civic education in particular, the CGE Erfurt-coordinated consortium of the Unsung Hero Dialogues project has developed an international survey to gather information on the economic- and labor situation of employees, employers, free lancers and volunteers in civil society.

It is our aim to use the gathered data to better represent the needs of civil society workers in (policy) discussions with decision makers and the broader public on the financial and non-financial value of civil society and of those working in it.

We are very happy indeed to officially launch the survey today – and kindly ask you to participate in it and share it far and wide with those interested.
